The Right Kind of Love?
By Tillmon
Unconditional love. I wonder: As imperfect human beings, are we capable of what is, for all intents and purposes, a perfect form of love?
Have you ever thought about what unconditional love involves? As Christians, we are commanded to love God with our entire being; and to love our neighbor as ourselves. God said do it, so it’s a done deal, right?
Or is it?
Four Loves
Let’s take a look at the four loves that are taught to Christians, as defined by Wikipedia:
- Storge: affection.Fondness through familiarity, especially between family members or people who have otherwise found themselves together by chance.
- Phileo: friendship. The love between friends. Friendship is the strong bond existing between people who share common interest or activity.
- Eros: physical. The physical, sensual love between a husband and wife.
- Agape: unconditional. Selfless, sacrificial, unconditional love, the highest of the four types of love in the bible.
What Kind of Love?
We are commanded to love; but are we commanded to love unconditionally? After all, in His Word, God does not stipulate any conditions for us to stop loving a person. So does that mean He commands us to love unconditionally? If so, does that mean that we must love a person no matter what that person does to themselves, to us, or our loved ones?
What do you think? Think about the people who have wronged you in some way, and then leave us a comment with your thoughts on unconditional love. And please share this post with your friends. Let’s see what they have to say.
